Dude!
(Sorry - ever since you acquainted me with the memories of when we were teenagers, I have this picture of you in my head...)
IMHO -
So, here's my Skinny, speaking ex cathedra from the belly button; the navel of the umbilicus...

I have not a clue as to what the Next Big Idea will be.
Cheap Energy?
Nano Technology?
Revelation from G-d?
Don't Know.
But, it will happen.
History is Always an indicator of the future. Always.
The American economy may well be toast. It's possible.
But, historically speaking, "The Economy" has been An Imaginary Belief System for a very long time.
It keeps on getting broke and then, it fixes itself when the Next Big Idea enables the Players to Believe again.
That is the History of our Economy or even the economies of this planet.

To my woeful ignorance of economics and money, it appears to me, on the face of it, that there is absolutely no reason that we should recover from this current economic downturn. There is Nothing there. We be broke and we don't be having no monies to fix Us.

However, Ideas have always increased on an exponential level for all of History. How could they not?
More people equals more knowledge equals more access to knowledge equals more people with knowledge equals more knowledge ad infinitum.
The clock is not running backwards. It's moving forwards at a dizzying rate of speed.
And, somewhere, some bright fellow has already created a working paradigm of a new Something Idea that will eventually lead us out of this current blip of a Crisis. All of History proclaims this. This is what humans do - we change things and advance, at least in the realm of hard facts and figures.
(We tend to wipe out large numbers of people along the way, but that is largely due to personal preferences, not economic permutations.)

You know, when people talk about the Rome Empire - the Rise and Fall - they generally tend to focus on the city of Rome.
In reality, even back then, the Roman Empire, from its inception as a Republic to its final destruction as an Empire in 1453 by the Muslim Turks, lasted 2,000 years....
And that was with a Zero Knowledge base in comparison to what we have today.

If we can avoid having people Eat each other; or stop the Islamists from murdering each other and us; or not have China decide to annex Siberia; or all of the other wonderful social things that are going on in the world today, then we'll be okay.
People will Play with their Imaginary Money once more and we'll all be happy as Professional Traders buy and sell empty Widgets that no one needs.
Because, someone will have come up with an IDEA that Changes the whole paradigm once more...
It will happen.
I would suggest that those that are nervous about waiting for it should, themselves, come up with this next Big Idea.
Why not?
Could it hurt?
Might it help?

Nice articles... now we have to work even harder for those who choose not to work and for those government employees making wonderful benefits now and after retirement. Makes a lot of sense huh? There are no rewards for the hard-working middle and upper class Americans. We just pay our dues more in taxes and end up paying full college tuition for our children so they don't live off the government like many other Americans. They then repeat the same process for their family. Talk about abusing the working class! Guess it would be easier to sit back, not work hard, collect Grant money, food stamps and anything the government is willing to provide to those who demand it!

I was thinking about the whole food stamp (SNAP) issue yesterday. I was hung over so had to stop at the local gas station for some Gatorade and the women in front of me bought a Coke, Slim Jim, and Kit Kat bar. Unlike some states (Tennessee for one) we don't tax unprepared nutritional food in NY, so lettuce, bananas, meat would be tax free. I assumed that with food stamps a person could only buy these types of food with their SNAP card, however at this particular location they were able to buy all sorts of junk food with a food SNAP card. This pissed me off for two reasons. 1) The obvious fact that someone can buy candy and pop with tax payer money. 2) The fact that someone can buy this stuff at a gas station which easily has a huge mark up. If the government is giving away the money, shouldn't they be able to pay a flat rate or chose where you can buy your food instead? I live on the same street as a Wilson Farms and I see people go in there and buy milk, eggs, and bread with a SNAP card then pay for beer and smokes with cash. It doesn't really bother me as much that they buy beer, but what bothers me is that they can buy bread at almost $4 a loaf when they can walk extra 100 yards to a grocery store and get four loaves for the same price!

Since were on the subject, I know someone who works at a local food bank, and because Buffalo is so generous there is an abundance of food available. My friend tells the story better, but in a nutshell people get upset if they don't have "Branded" items like Kraft Mac and Cheese. Yes these beggars are choosers!

The kleptocrats are coming for your Social Security next. They are already taking away Food Stamp benefits to pay teachers that we won't get school districts are pocketing the money to keep their property tax rates down. What do the wealthy get? A bigger slice of the pie. This is what you are, a slave you might be a house slave getting a little better treatment but you too are likely a slave too existing to benefit your masters the uberwealthy. This song goes out to you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT1a4pEF8J8

totally agree with you on the BP topic. it seems like they are doing way too little to clean up the mess they made and its one huge blame game. with 3 huge companies involved everyone is pointing a finger at a different person. the gov is going to try and sue them for $X but you know damn well after 10 years of litigation the people will only see about 10% of $X. i feel bad for everyone in the gulf coast affected by this.

as for politicians i couldn't agree more either. the fact that corporations can donate as much as they want now too only makes matters worse. if politicians weren't owned by private corporations before they sure are now.

good column!

I have enjoyed Bill Maher through the years. A showman yes, but a true out of the box thinker more importantly. Oh, and call me the next time your planning on doing bong hits with him at Woody's...or just call me the next time your planning on doing bong hits - as I mentioned in my post, I can't seem to find the hookah!
